Blame. First thing’s first. It is not your fault. What has happened, has happened. There is nothing you can do to change it and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it. It is not in your best interested to worry about the past and regret things or blame your lifestyle. The best thing you can do is enjoy now, and look towards how to have the most satisfactory life under the circumstances.

Get Help. An Alzheimer’s diagnosis means that you need to sacrifice yourself to the assistance of others. It is hard to ask for help, but now is the time to practice. A lot of very simple day-to-day tasks will soon be difficult to do on your own. Reach out to those you love. That’s what they are there for!

Plan for the Future. There are a lot of big decisions to be made right now because in the future, you won’t be able to make them for yourself. Do your research and find out about these choices. Some include financial, medical and caretaking services. The government also offers benefits to sufferers and caretakers, so be sure to find out all that you can now.

Don’t Self-Medicate. It is an easy cop out to turn to mind altering substances in order to forget all of the sadness happening in your life. Unfortunately, it will only make things worse. People with addiction problems, also tend towards depression. Don’t let both things bring you down. Instead, process your feelings and emotions about your diagnosis. It is the only way you will reach a place of acceptance.
